MARGAO: Taking cognizance of the issue highlighted by Herald pertaining to the dumping of garbage and waste along the Arlem-Nuvem eastern bypass, Raia Village Panchayat has urged the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to clear and clean the bushes and shrubs, along the roadside at the earliest.
Sarpanch Judas Quadros said that they have requested the authorities to take up this cleaning work on war footing to alleviate the situation.

“Recently, it is seen that massive black spots of garbage and trash have started developing on either side of this road and are rapidly spreading its tentacles with every passing day. A case in point is the start of the bypass while proceeding towards Nuvem from Arlem circle, where a huge garbage dump is mushrooming amidst the vegetation consisting of bushes, shrubs and some small trees,” states the letter addressed to the NHAI.
It is pertinent to note that some imprudent people, taking advantage of this shrubbery are seen to slow down or stop their vehicles and fling waste-laden plastic bags into the undergrowth, especially on the right side of the road.
Sarpanch said, “A lot of these garbage bags can even be seen by the roadside, some stripped open by stray dogs with its waste and refuse strewn across the road.”
“A recent example is dumping of rotten chicken waste and food waste which had raised an unbearable stink on this road stretch a few days back. With every passing day, the dump is alarmingly growing in size,” he stated.
The panchayat has also brought to the notice of the authorities that the solid garbage dumped here, especially plastic items, block an choke the storm water drainages/culverts constructed by the concerned department and cause flooding as seen during the last monsoon season wherein the entire Arlem circle and one lane of the Margao-Ponda highway was totally inundated with rainwater, inconveniencing the vehicular traffic.
The Raia Panchayat is of the opinion that these cleanliness initiatives will appeal to the better sense and deter thosedumping garbage.
