MARGAO: Margao Municipal Council (MMC) Chief Officer Johnson Fernandes in an order issued on Monday has directed the sanitary officials to conduct an inspection to keep a check on the encroachments in municipal jurisdiction.
The instruction comes after MMC Chairperson Babita Angle’s suo motu inspection of the railway station on the Aquem side wherein she had expressed anguish over the defaced locality.
Immediately receiving after the order, the sanitary officials swung into action and inspector Viraj Arabekar cleared the footpath of clothes and miscellaneous items. These vendors were conducting business in front of the MMC blocking the footpaths.
It may be recalled that the MMC Chairperson was angry when she found the food stalls near the railway station on the Aquem side operating in the most filthy and unethical manner. The chairperson had assured action on the encroachments.
Recently, it was seen that there were another two carts operating in the area taking the number to 15. There is another cart along the same road leading to the Victor Hospital and one more just opposite the hospital. However, there is no information as to whether these carts are licensed or not.
The Chief Officer informed on Monday that he has issued an order to the Sanitary officials empowering them to inspect such encroachments and filth-prone areas and act against them.
“Even if there are some unscrupulous elements dumping garbage in the open in Margao in wee hours I have asked the sanitary officials to immediately act,” said Johnson.
Speaking on the encroachments, he said, “There are some carts which have licences and others which don’t. I have asked the sanitary officials to go with the market officials to complete the inquiry,” said Johnson.
