MARGAO: After much ado, the Margao municipality has cracked the whip and this time it is big.
The MMC has gone ahead with the water disconnection of a 60-flat residential complex in Aquem over glaring violations in sewage management.
The Aquem complex is not the only errant. MMC sources have informed that there are at least 5-8 projects in Margao that are in violation of building by-laws as far as sewage management is concerned.
During a site inspection at Akar Habitat in Aquem, the municipal sanitary inspectors had noticed that the waste water/sewage from the chambers of septic tanks of the building was discharged in the surrounding and the waste water was getting stagnant in the vicinity.
Later, notice was issued directing the party to stop the same within 24 hours from the receipt of the same. The MMC received the reply submitted by Akar Creation Pvt Ltd which was not satisfactory and was seen that no action was taken by the builder of the building and the nuisance continued.
Therefore, on Wednesday, the chief officer ordered disconnection of water to Akar Habitat with immediate effect. Highly placed sources in the MMC have informed that there are 6 to 8 such projects in the Margao town in violations of building by-laws, which mandated that projects of over 60 flats should have an independent sewage treatment plant.
