One drowns in Khushavati
CANACONA: A 32-year-old resident of Cacora-Sanvordem drowned in river Khushavati at Vazrem-Bhatpal, Canacona, on Monday afternoon.
According to Canacona Police, Jhoncy Ubaldo Fernandes and five others including his cousin had gone for a picnic at Vazrem, a well-known riverside outing.
Police further informed that while they were swimming, Fernandes suddenly drowned in deep waters at Vazrem in river Khushavati, also known as river Talpona.
According to sources, the body of Fernandes was later fished out of the water.
The body was sent to Hospicio morgue in Margao for post-mortem. Police is investigating the case under the guidance of Canacona PI Harischandra Madkaikar.
Kerala native found dead
CURCHOREM: A 39-year-old native of Kerala was found dead in his rented room at Mullem-Agaramorad, Gudi, on Sunday. Quepem Police have identified the deceased as Raju Naik. Police are investigating the case.
Vasco rape case handed over to CBI
PANJIM: The Goa government today handed the rape case of the minor girl at Vasco to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), according to a press statement issued by the Directorate of Information.
The order has accorded consent to the Delhi Special Police Establishment under Section 6 of the Delhi Special Police Establishment Act to investigate the case.
Goa government has last month decided to recommend a CBI probe into the alleged rape of the seven-year-old girl inside a school toilet on January 14.
Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar had told the media the case could not be solved, which is why the CBI probe was recommended.
Parrikar had already written to the Director General of Police (DGP) Kishan Kumar asking him to write to CBI soon to take over the case. “CBI has a wider information base. They can certainly do a better job,” the Chief Minister was quoted as saying.
The seven-year-old girl was allegedly raped inside a school toilet at Vasco town in Goa on 14 January this year. Subsequently, Goa Police had formed a special investigation team (SIT), which failed to nab the accused.
Police had investigated the DNA profile of the suspects, one of whom is living abroad.
The victim’s parents had warned to approach the Bombay High Court at Goa with the plea that the case be handed over to CBI.
Plaint of abuse, threat filed
PORVORIM: A resident of Muddowado-Cansa, Tivim, has accused a man from the same ward of abusing and threatening him. According to Mapusa Police, Pandurang Parsekar complained that on Sunday, the accused restrained and abused him and also threatened him with dire consequence. The complainant further stated that during the scuffle, he lost his gold chain worth about Rs 25,000. PI T Vernekar is investigating the case.
Cooking contest held at Navelim
PANJIM: Cooking competition ‘Magic Portions’ was conducted by Navelkarancho Ekvott in collaboration with Margao Govt Industrial Training Institute, Aquem-Baixo, Navelim. The event was supported by Avertano Furtado, Minister for Labour, Employment Fisheries and was inaugurated by Edwin Fernandes, Principal, Margao ITI.
10 teams of 3 members each participated and prepared three different courses ~ Hors d’oeuvres (appetizers), main course and desserts. Alcina Rebello, Namrata Naik, Sandra Pereira and Dixon D’Costa were the judges. Guest of Honour, Alexio F da Costa, Director SDCT explained the importance and benefits of the Government approved ITI courses and certificates. Satyavijay Naik, BJP Block President proposed the vote of thanks.
Desk top Publishing courses

Roque Santana anniversary observed
PANJIM: The 51st anniversary of the ‘Father of Goan Democracy’ late Roque Santana Fernandes who went on an indefinite hunger strike in Margao in 1962 which resulted in elections being declared for the first time in Goa in December 1963 was observed in Velim, Monday.
The late Roque Santana resorted to a fast unto death demanding that elected members and not appointed ones should represent Goa in Parliament, with the result that Gopal Handoo, adviser to then Lt Governor of Goa met him at the instance of then prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru. He gave up the strike, met Nehru and it was agreed to hold elections for the first time in Goa in 1963. It is for the democratic fight that he was hailed as the `Father of Goan Democracy.’
Late Roque Santana was subsequently elected to Goa Assembly twice in 1967 and 1971 and was awarded Tambra Patra for his contribution for Goa’s freedom.
Financial aid to students
PANJIM: Rotary Club of Panaji Charitable Trust invites applications from financially weak and needy students who have passed XII in 2013 with a minimum of 50 per cent marks and who desire to continue their studies.
In this Financial Assistance Scheme a student is given Rs 5000 per annum as scholarship, till completion of course. The student has to pass the examination every year.

Book on Mast Dattaram released
PANJIM: A book publication ceremony of the book ‘Natyaveer’ and photo exhibition was organized by Directorate of Art and Culture to mark the birth centenary of late Master Dattaram Volvoikar at Panjim.
Minister for Co-operation Pandurang (Deepak) Dhavlikar was the chief guest and said that Sangeet Natak is very unique art form and needs to be preserved for posterity.
Padmashree Prasad Sawkar, Dr Ajay Vaidya, Pandit Ramdas Kamat, Ashalata Babgoankar, Mohandas Sukhatankar, Ramkrishna Naik, Kamlakar Nadkarni, Bhiku Pai Angle, Krishnakant Dalvi, Narayan (Nana) Volvoikar, Chariman and Institute Menezes Braganza Sanjay Harmalkar and others were present. Ajay Vaidya spoke on the book. Ashok Parab welcomed while Pradip Naik compered. The function was followed by natyasangeet programme.
Research work translated, published
PANJIM: The research work titled ‘Goa-Bahia Intra-Colonial Relations, 1675-1825’ has been translated into Portuguese by FUNAG, Brazil, to make it available for wider reading in Brazil and Portugal. The work, authored by Dr Philomena Sequeira-Antony, Associate Professor in the Dept of History at Chowgule College, Margao, was done under the guidance of the historian Prof Teotonio de Souza.
Dr Sequeira-Antony joined Chowgule College as lecturer in 1971. She is the first to secure a First Class in Goa in BA from Bombay University. She has simultaneously taught courses at Post-Graduate dept of Bombay University and later at Goa University. She was Counselor at the correspondence course of Bombay University and Indira Gandhi National Open University for several years. She was also associated with teaching at Kare Law College in Margao.
She was awarded an International Research Project by FUNAG and funded by United Nations Development Programme.
Nursing course prospectus available
PANJIM: The prospectus for R-ANM Nursing Course, 2013-14 is available with the Principal, Institute of Nursing Education, Opp Military Workshop Bambolim from June 11. The complete forms should be submitted by July 2. The course is open only for females. The cost of the prospectus is Rs 150. The academic session begins on August 1.

Anandostav-2013 at BITS Pilani
VASCO: Art of Living founder Sri Sri Ravishankar will visit BITS Pilani, Goa campus auditorium, Zuari Nagar, on June 18. Rs 100 crore to establish TRUST
MARGAO: International conference on strategic development in commerce, management, engineering and social sciences, jointly organized by Indo-Global Chambers of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture, Goa Commerce Association, GCCI and Sri Damodar College, was inaugurated by Dr Priya Ranjan Trivedi, Chancellor and Plenipotentiary, The Global Open University Nagaland and Indira Gandhi Technological and Medical Sciences University, Arunachal Pradesh. He stressed the need for the vocationalisation of careers in the State through skill-based and employment centric vocational courses.
Dr Trivedi declared that the World Institution Building Programme will be allocating Rs 100 crore for the establishment of Tribal Research University for Skill Training (TRUST) in the State. Ganesh Gaonkar MLA was the guest of honour. Others present were Ramnath Kare, Dr A Anwar Sheikh, Dr Manoj S Kamat, Dr Bonu N Swami, Dr Bhanu Murthy and Prof Sachin Kulkarni, More than 300 papers are scheduled to be presented to propose a masterplan paradigm.
