PANJIM: Over 500 BSNL contract workers in the State have not been paid salaries for three months and the All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) has threatened to undertake an indefinite agitation.

In a statement, AITUC General Secretary Christopher Fonseca said, “The management of BSNL has not paid 3 months salaries of over 500 BSNL workers employed throughout Goa through designated contractors, whereas the permanent employees, staff and officers employed directly by the BSNL management have been paid upto date salaries.”

He further said that due to the non-payment of salaries, the families of the employees are undergoing painful circumstances and are starving.

The AITUC has also urged the Prime Minister Narendra Modi led government to realise the stark realities and human consequences of privatisation, promotion of private telecom operators at the cost of BSNL.

“The Regional Labour Commissioner (Central) and the Ministry for Telecommunications, Government of India, have not shown any inclination to resolve the problems of the BSNL contract workers. The Union has therefore decided to unleash an indefinite agitation,” AITUC threatened.
