Almost every Goan owns a vehicle

PORVORIM: Almost every person in Goa owns a vehicle. While the State’s human population – as per Census 2011 stood at 14,58,545 – the vehicular population stood at 12,29,475, with 68.87 percent comprising two-wheelers.

As per the Economic Survey 2016-17 tabled on the Floor of the House, the number of motor vehicles registered in the State stood at 12,29,475 as on February 2017. Interestingly, the number of driving licences as on February 2017 stood at 6,64,910, that consist of 54.27 percent in South Goa while 45.73 percent in North. “For the year 2016-17, total 71,233 vehicles are added,” the survey stated. 

As per the data, the State has nearly 8,46,705 two-wheelers which is almost 68.87 percent of the total vehicule population. This is followed by private cars and jeeps at 2,49,046, which accounts to 20.25% of the population.

The report states that Goa has a majority of non-transport vehicles which accounts to 89.83 percent of the total vehicle population. It is around 11,04,489. On the other hand, transport vehicles are only 1,24,985.

The figures further reveal that there are 4868 government vehicles registered. Also 26,975 two-wheelers on hire are registered with the government which is 2.19 percent of total transport vehicular population (10.17 percent). 

The State public transport, like buses, comprises only 0.96 percent that is 11,861.  

The Transport Department revenue collection till date has been Rs 213.45 crore. “The revenue collection has decreased from Rs 414.19 crore during 2014-15 to 223.26 crore during 2015-16 indicating a decrease of around 53 percent,” the report stated.
