MARGAO: Sao Jose de Areal at an extraordinary gram sabha held on Sunday that was attended by around 200 villagers, including the panchayat members and the ZP member, in one voice rejected the double tracking of the South Western Railway track in the village.

Initiating the discussion, Sarpanch Perris D’Costa said that the Collector’s office had sent the consent form to all whose names were included in Form I and XIV of properties sought to be acquired and that the panchayat had asked the people not to give their consent till it studied the matter.

Subsequently, twice when the railway authorities came to demarcate the area that would be acquired, people had objected to the same and sent them back.

Speaking on behalf of the villagers, Freddy Travasso said the people are totally opposed to double tracking of the railway line on grounds that it would not only disturb their peace but also damage their ancestral houses.

He said that if the double tracking is sought to be done to install another platform in the village, they did not want the platform.
