PANJIM:  In a proud moment for Goa, Panjim-based Deep Dessai of Mushtifund Aryaan Higher Secondary School (MAHSS) has made it to top 30 All India Rank (AIR) of Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY) fellowship. Deep stood 27 at AIR, the all time record rank for the State.

Also, Jaiprakash Gurav of Sanvordem made it to 31 AIR of KVPY. Jaiprakash is the only student from MAHSS to clear KVPY in standard XI and XII.

KVPY scholarship of Government of India’s department of Science and Technology is an initiative to inspire and encourage students to pursue a career in science and research. In last six years, as many as 18 students of MAHSS have cleared the aptitude test.

Having love and affection towards science, both Deep and Jaiprakash cracked one of the toughest exams with an overall score of 80 percent for online written test, followed by oral interview.

While, Deep has a fascination towards research since childhood and may opt for scholarship, Jaiprakash is yet to take a call.

“I always wanted to go into research since childhood. My parents have been biggest motivation for me. So also the MAHSS faculty. The school environment also motivates you a lot,” Deep, who is a topper from Sharada Mandir High School, said.

Jaiprakash has thanked his parents, who decided to shift all the way from Sanvordem to Panjim just to ensure that their son studies are not affected due to travelling. “I stay in Panjim with my mother. Initially, we shifted to Margao when I was in Std XI and then to Panjim,” he said.

Director of the institute Vyankatesh Prabhudesai said that the rank scored by the two students is all time record for the institution. “The earlier best was 98 secured by Prateek Rebello in 2017,” he said.

Prabhudesai said that the school has one of the best team which includes mentors who select cream of students and train them for their future career.

KVPY fellowship programme is run by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, and the selection is done in three streams (PCM, PCB and PCMB). KVPY scholars in science stream also receive a monthly scholarship of Rs 6,000. Goa has two centres- Panjim and Mapusa.
