PANJIM: Failing to compensate a family after acquiring their property for road widening, the North District & Sessions Court has directed its office to attach movable property of Ponda Municipal Council to ensure that the affected family is paid the sum along with interest calculated.

As per case details, Ponda municipality had acquired the land belonging to the Verenkar family for road widening in 2010, however, no payment as compensation has been made since then. The court was then approached after which Principal Sessions Judge on April 30, 2016 directed the Chief Officer to pay Rs 11.76 lakh approximately with interest to decree holders Premandand and his wife Shailaja Verenkar. The municipality failed to abide by the order with the Principal Sessions Judge Irshad Aga now directing its staff to attach the two cars belonging to the municipality till the amount is paid to the decree holders.

As per the order, the chief officer is asked to pay the total amount along with interest up to October 31, 2016 and further interest of 15 percent from November 1, 2016 until the total costs are paid to the family. The ‘debtor’ municipality has been asked to make the payment within 60 days.
