CANACONA: A half a day complete shutdown has been called for in Canacona on March 31 to protest the rape and murder of Irish-British girl.

The decision to call for a shutdown was taken at a meeting held in the chamber of Canacona municipal Chairperson Mrs Prathana Ramakant Naik Gaonkar, on Thursday. The meeting was attended by councillors, businessmen and general public.

The meeting unanimously decided to hold a complete bandh for half a day on March 31, from morning till 1 pm in municipal area and Agonda area of Canacona. 

Shantaji Desai, a retired headmaster and a social worker, informed the meeting that a 15-member committee has been formed under the leadership Mrs Naik Gaonkar to monitor the progress and seek immediate justice for Danielle McLaughlin and to take comprehensive steps so that this type of incidents don’t happen in future.

Sham Sundar Desai, a local, said the alleged killer of Danielle may be behind the bars, but his gang is still on the loose threatening locals and tourists alike.

‘Goenkar’ general secretary Vikas Bhagat reminded that police had promised an outpost at Palolem a year ago, but till it has not become a reality.

Meanwhile, a meeting will be held at Gaitonde Mini Sports Complex, Chaudi, on March 31, at 10 am, in memory of Danielle McLaughlin.
