CANACONA:  Barcem women staged a morcha, recently, at the local panchayat office in Padi to highlight the health hazards and destruction of families due to the illegal sale and consumption of liquor by the youth.

Armed with placards, around 50 women marched to the panchayat office to highlight the plight of some youth and their families due to illegal sale and consumption of liquor.

The village women said that the illegal sale of liquor is going on in their villages since long time due to which 10-12 youth die every year. Suicide cases are also reported in the village with many families being ruined as the youth from the families have fallen to this vice.

With no NGO or government authority to rehabilitate the alcoholic youth, life has become miserable for those whose son or husband addicted to alcohol. Such men face impotency, cirrhosis of the liver, fatty liver, stomach disorders, pancreatitis etc and eventual death.

Later, all the women confronted the sarpanch and pachas of the Barcem panchayat and asked them to initiate action and stop illegal sale of liquor in the panchayat area.
