Bardez leads in CRZ violations

Has 40% of total cases reported in last almost four years; Sanguem has just 1 case

PORVORIM: Bardez taluka, which has internationally famous beaches like Calangute-Candolim-Baga, also has the largest number of Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) violation cases – 40 percent – reported in Goa in last three and half years, reveals government data tabled on the floor of the House. 

In all 1104 CRZ violations have been reported in the State from January 2014 till October 31, 2017. Just 43 cases have been disposed off till now, while the rest are pending inquiry before the expert committee of the Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority (GCZMA). Another 19 cases are pending in litigation before National Green Tribunal (NGT). 

The information was submitted by Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar to a question tabled by Congress MLA Antonio Fernandes. 

Bardez taluka tops the list with 442 cases, followed by Salcette with 184 and Pernem with 183 cases. These three are the coastal belt talukas. 

Tiswadi has reported 134 cases, while Canacona has 81 cases followed by Mormugao with 50 cases. Sanguem taluka has the least number of cases that is one, while Quepem has six and Bicholim has 9 cases reported.
