MARGAO: Swearing by the constant demand of the people that scrap yards shouldn’t be there in residential areas, TCP Minister Vijai Sardesai informed that the government would bring in a comprehensive Bill banning scrap yards from residential areas.

He said that the Bill would be introduced in the Assembly during its budget session and the ban would come into force from next financial year.

The TCP minister said that the government will have to give a designated area as scrap material has been classified as solid waste now. “It is the duty of the government to find a solution to this problem and I have spoken to the Chief Minister (Manohar Parrikar) on this issue; we will move the bill,” Vijai said.

“The Municipal Administration and the Government which have gone to sleep over the complaints of scrap yards in the residential areas will be awakened,” TCP Minister assured.

It may be recalled that a scrap yard in Gawliwado Fatorda had caught fire causing panic all over the area. Taking cognisance of the case, the minister inspected the scrap on Saturday. The custodian of the scrap was advised by the minister to find a place elsewhere immediately and shift the yard to non-residential area.
