PANJIM: The Crime Branch
(CB) sleuths are interrogating the Sada sub jail guards as it has launched a
fresh investigation into the killing of gangster Vinayak Karbotkar, over a week
after the case was transferred from Mormugao police station. The ongoing
investigation has however not recorded arrest of any suspect or accused as on
date.
CB SP Umesh Gaonkar said the
investigation team is questioning the jail guards, who were on duty when
Vinayak was attacked in a clash between the jail inmates on the night on
January 23. “We took over all the required documents (from Mormugao police)
when the case was handed over to us for investigation. The jail guards, who
were present on duty at the time of the incident in the jail premise, are being
questioned,” he told Herald.
The deceased accused’s
father Tulsidas Karbotkar had earlier this month approached the Director
General of Police Dr Muktesh Chander demanding to hand over the case to the CB.
He had accused the jail authorities and the staff of three police stations for
the fatal attack on his son. “The jail authorities along with the staff of
Verna, Vasco and Mormugao police stations are responsible for the assault (on
Vinayak) on account of which he sustained serious and grave injuries, resulting
in his death in judicial custody. Vinayak was intentionally inflicted injuries
on his body,” the letter stated.
Vinayak, who was serving jail for allegedly murdering history
sheeter Ashpak Bhengre in Colvale Jail in June 2016,
was
killed inside the jail at Vasco on January 23 after a fight broke out between
two groups of jail prisoners

murder) and other charges of the Indian Penal Code.
