MARGAO: The Camorlim gram sabha on Sunday besides opposing nationalisation of rivers in Goa and demanding stopping coal handling in the State also endorsed the panchayat action of issuing a notice to those who erected a mobile tower in the village overnight and threatened to agitate if the State Highway passing through the village is not asphalted immediately.

Ancy Cardoso and Agostinho Cardoso spearheaded the resolutions regarding the nationalization of rivers and coal handling. Their contention was that nationalization of rivers would affect the fisher folk and destroy that khazan lands and hence prove to be an ecological disaster.

They cautioned the people about the ill effects of coal dust pollution which even leads to lung cancer and the crowd present agreeing with them unanimously adopted the two resolutions.

The mobile tower at Sonfator along the Margao Ponda highway was discussed at length with people demanding to know how it had come up. However, Sarpanch Basilio Fernandes explained that the panchayat had not permitted that tower and instead revealed that the panchayat had pasted a notice on the tower so that those who erected it would respond.

“Besides, the panchayat has also complained to the Police and the Collector about the matter and we have not received any reply from these authorities as yet,” he said. The villagers unanimously endorsed the panchayat action and said they wanted the tower to be removed as soon as possible.
