PANJIM: Anti-mining activist and Goa Foundation director Claude Alvares moved the court for anticipatory bail on Wednesday, a day after he was summoned by Panjim police for interrogation into the locking of Mines & Geology Department.

“We had summoned Alvares for the investigation. He was directed to appear at 4 pm but he has moved the court for anticipatory bail. The court is yet to decide when the matter will be put up for hearing,” Panjim Police Inspector Siddhanth Shirodkar said.

Panjim Police had last month registered an FIR against activist Alvares and Rahul Basu for for damage to public property and wrongful confinement.

and obstruction to public servant while on duty.

Goa Foundation along with other NGOs had locked the door of the Mines department and handed over the keys to Panjim Police Station. GF alleged that the department is not acting responsibly to deal with the mining scam and demanded that the department be closed permanently.
