MARGAO: “Looking at the increasing number of cases of elders of Goa in distress, soon there will be a Commission for Justice to Elders,” said Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar.

He was speaking at a function organised to distribute physical aids and assisted living devices to senior citizens belonging to BPL category under Rashtriya Vayoshri Yojna, at Margao Ravindra Bhavan on Saturday.

Union Minister of Social Justice & Empowerment Thaawarchand Gehelot attended the function.

The scheme has been implemented by the Artificial Limbs Manufacturing Corporation of India (ALIMCO), Kanpur, in association with South Goa District Administration.

Further, the chief minister said, “After the age of 60 people don’t become useless. They can contribute till their last breath. The government has given the aids just to overcome the deficiencies that come up in the old ages.”

“There has been a rise in cases of elders in distress all over the State. This has created the need for Commission for Justice to the Elders of the State. Government promises that the commission will be formulated soon and there will be more power for social welfare office in South Goa,” Parrikar said.

On the occasion, South Goa MP Narendra Sawaikar said, “1407 persons will benefit from the scheme with at least 3000 articles distributed at a cost of Rs 59 lakh to the needy. With the efforts of the government, its schemes are reaching the people.”
