PANJIM: Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) will decide whether to challenge in the Supreme Court, the order of High Court of Bombay at Goa in the disqualification petition against their former MLA Vishwajit Rane.

Speaking to Herald GPCC president Shanataram Naik said, “Advocates Ramakant Khalap and Surendra Desai are presently studying the court order and the grounds to challenge it in the Supreme Court of India.”

He said there is no possibility of approaching the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly but a decision would be taken after studying the order. Leader of the Opposition Chandrakant (Babu) Kavlekar said that the challenge petition would be decided by the All India Congress Committee and GPCC.

A bench of High Court on October 11 had dismissed the disqualification petition against Rane citing that the powers to resolve such disputes vest with the Speaker. It had also said that the petition takes up two conflicting positions simultaneously. Rane who quit the Congress is currently with the BJP and a minister in the Manohar Parrikar government.
