MARGAO: The meeting of the Sub-Committee of the Consumer Protection Council, South Goa, has discussed the problems of potholes and the serious problems related to them. The NGO GOACAN said that it is the total negligence of the PWD in ensuring the safety of people on roads.

The meeting raised serious concerns over the accidental deaths due to bad roads. The bad roads have now started killing people even on passenger buses. The Road Transport Office, Traffic Cell, Panchayats, GOACAN, and others were present at the meeting.

However, no PWD official was present for the meeting on Tuesday. It informed at the meeting that PWD officials did not attend the meeting that was convened by the Chief Secretary for similar discussions.

GOACAN Convenor Roland Martins said, “It is total negligence of PWD in ensuring road safety to the persons on road. Two & four wheelers, pedestrians and now people are not safe in even busses. We will file complaints before the Consumer Forum against the PWD for roads accidents.”

To have a more effective and intrinsic campaign to assure road safety, the Committee has decided to document the potholes across the State so that when they are filled the right and lasting methods are used. The committee also decided to analyse the road accidents across Goa.

“There is something to learn from every road accident and by analyzing we can make sure that they don't repeat,” Martins said.

Welcoming the decision to keep the enforcement of the new Motor Vehicles on hold till January, Martins said that they would create more awareness and would take all the Consumer forums together for help.
