Culture Dept seeks MMC building for district library

MAPUSA: The Art and Culture Department has requested the Mapusa municipality to hand over the old municipal building on rent-free basis to set up a district library.

This was informed by MMC Chairperson Ryan Braganza during the ordinary council meeting held on Friday.

“It is an old building whose condition is going from bad to worse and needs to be maintained. We should hand over the building to the Art and Culture Department,” he said.

A resolution was passed to utilise the grants of the14th Finance Commission for 2019-20 to the tune of Rs 1.85 crores for undertaking road widening works from Gandhi Circle to Mapusa Bodgeshwar nullah. The council has also decided to utilise grants of Rs 93.41 lakh for construction of 197 single-seater toilets in the town.

The Council has hiked monthly remuneration from Rs 12,500 to Rs 15,000 of six temporary workers from the office section.

MMC has got a proposal from the Indian Medical Association requesting them to provide a land admeasuring 80 square meter with pits to be used for disposal of bio medical waste and pay a rent of Rs 6,500 per month to avail of the same.

Following discussions it was resolved to provide them with a land and pits would be constructed under CSR and rent of Rs 12,000 would be charged.

The council also decided to register pet dogs in the municipal jurisdiction and charge a tax of Rs 100.
