FDA cracks down on illegal sweet manufacturers

Seizes and destroys sweets worth Rs 55,000 at Ponda raid

PONDA: Continuing its crackdown on unhygienic food items in view of the ongoing Diwali festival, officials of the Directorate of Food and Drugs Administration (FDA), on Thursday raided a house in Ponda, seized and destroyed sweets worth Rs 55,000 and also sealed the premises. Besides, old stock of around 30kg mava was also destroyed.

A team of FDA officials consisting of Rajiv Korde, Atul Desai and Rama Gaonkar made a surprise inspection at a house at Santa Cruz Ponda (near Sub District Hospital), where they reportedly noticed preparation of various sweets without FDA permission and in an unhygienic condition using with rusted utensils. Thereafter, the team seized and destroyed the sweets and also sealed the house.

The FDA officials said that the food handlers were without proper attire.

Rajiv Korde registered an offence against Ramdev Modhi for manufacturing the sweet items without FDA permission and in an unhygienic condition. Modhi was also directed not to manufacture sweet items. 

Rajiv Korde informed Herald that since past two weeks several raids were conducted and sweets worth Rs 8 lakh prepared without permission in unauthorized premises and in an unhygienic condition were seized and destroyed.
