Five-year jail for dacoity convicts

MARGAO: Additional Sessions Judge II Sayonara Teles Laad on Saturday sentenced five persons to five years imprisonment for dacoity that had occurred on September 5, 2015 and the time they have spent in jail will be counted to be part of the sentence served.

MARGAO: Additional Sessions Judge II Sayonara Teles Laad on Saturday sentenced five persons to five years imprisonment for dacoity that had occurred on September 5, 2015 and the time they have spent in jail will be counted to be part of the sentence served.

Margao Police had registered the case following a complaint from one Mantesh residing at Ponda who stated that some persons had assaulted him and three others near the Green View Hotel on the Station Road when they were going to the station to go to their native place.

Mantesh complained that his gold chain worth Rs 10,000 and a bag that had Rs 50,000 in it were snatched by the people who stopped and assaulted them. He also said another bag containing Rs 65,000 was also snatched by the miscreants.

Following investigations police arrested Kumar Bijapur, Babu Marathe, Basuraj Jamuni and Hamid Bepari the very next day namely (September 6, 2015) while Sameer Bepari was arrested on September 22, 2015 and since then they have been in prison.

All five were sentenced to one month imprisonment under Section 341 for wrongfully restraining the complainants. They were also sentenced to one year imprisonment under section 323 for assaulting the complaints and they have been sentenced to 5 years imprisonment for dacoity. Besides, each of them has been fined Rs 5,000 and in default one month jail.
