PANJIM: Health Minister Vishwajit Rane on Sunday announced the completion of dedicated 20-bed oncology ward in the Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMC). The Oncology OPD in GMC was inaugurated in April, this year.

Rane said that on the lines of the Cardiology Department and Cardiac Care Unit, the government will set up the Oncology Department in GMC under the leadership of Dr Anupama Borkar.

“I am happy to announce the completion of the oncology ward in GMC,” he said.

Of the total 20-beds, eight would be reserved for day care patients, who can visit the hospital for chemotherapy in the morning and return home by evening or night.

Currently, GMC is compelled to refer its cancer patients elsewhere, but with the new ward, which would be commissioned soon, it would be in position to provide in-house treatment.

The minister said with Central government assistance of Rs 100 crore a Regional Cancer Centre will be also set up and the work will be awarded to HSCC (India), a government of India enterprise.

“We have moved the file to allot the work of Regional Cancer Centre to HSCC so that the centre is ready along with the super specialty block,” Rane added.
