PORVORIM: Against the backdrop of student unions demanding open elections at Goa University (GU), the State government has submitted to the Chancellor revised statutes for conduct of University elections, in which the model system by Lyngdoh Commission in clause 6.2.2 is being followed.

Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar revealed this while replying to a question raised by Benaulim MLA Churchill Alemao who sought to know whether the government and GU are of the opinion of implementing the direct system/open university election to the GU student’s council as recommended by the Lyngdoh Commission.

“The revised statutes for conduct of University elections have been submitted to the Chancellor. Since the University follows affiliated system with college, the model system by Lyngdoh Commission in clause 6.2.2 is proposed and has been followed till date,” Parrikar said.

He further said, “6.2.2 a system of elections, where colleges and campuses directly elect colleges and campus office bearers, as well as university representatives. The university representatives form an electoral college, which shall elect the university student union office-bearer.”

Student unions had demanded open elections to the recent polls at GU wherein every university student would have the right to directly vote for their council members.

Replying to question raised by Bicholim MLA Rajesh Patnekar whether GU has WiFi facility on campus, Parrikar said, the internet facility is provided to all the buildings. There are labs within each faculty/department/library providing internet facility through LAN.
