Govt can consider extending Mayor’s term, says minister

Urban Development Minister Francis D’Souza on Thursday said the State Government can think of extending the term of the Mayor of Panjim if there a proposal.

“The Act says that the post of Mayor is for one year. Now I feel that continuity is required and this one year is very short period of time. This is my personal opinion but for this we have to change the law,” D’Souza said, speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a CCP function.

He said, “At present there is no proposal with the State government. There is only one corporation in the State, that is CCP, and no proposal has been moved by them, so there is no question of changing the law.”

He added, “There is a question of continuity. What I know today the next person won’t know unless all the councillors interact in a very good manner. They have to know what is happening, and for that a new person can take one year.”
