PANJIM: As the doctors protest across country intensify, Health Minister Vishwajit Rane on Saturday said that he would urge Union Ministry for Health to enact law in a bid to grant protection to the doctors and medical professionals.

Rane said that he would call up Union Minister Dr Harsha Vardhan for introducing laws for protecting doctors and medical professionals against any kind of violence.

Doctors across nation are on protest in support of doctors of Kolkata’s NRS Medical College and Hospital (NRSMCH), who are on indefinite strike over physical assault on two of their colleagues while on duty.

A young medical student was attacked allegedly by the relatives of a deceased patient in NRSMCH. The doctor was allegedly hit with a brick on his head, leaving him with a fractured skull and in critical condition.

In Goa too, the junior resident doctors of Goa Medical College and Hospital held one-day mass protest on Friday. The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has called for all-India doctors strike on Monday.

“I condemn the incidence of violence against doctors. The Government of Goa is against any kind of brutality and violence,” Rane said in a tweeter post.

He said the doctors save human life, their dedication towards the work is immeasurable and they do not deserve to be treated ruthlessly or barbarically. “This kind of behaviour is unjustified,” Rane said.

Health Minister has extended its full support to IMAs decision.

Rane said that he will also request the Ministry to act against those involved in the crime. “Such acts will not be ignored and those behind these crimes will be given the strict punishment,” he stated.

Goa Association of Resident Doctors at GMC have also demanded action against those involve in violence against doctors.

“We demand immediate arrest of all perpetrators involved and a formal apology from the Chief Minister of West Bengal for her action related to the incident. We are on mass protest as support to the doctors who were attacked,” Association President Dr Veeresh HM said.
