PANJIM: The management of Larsen & Toubro Limited has paid Rs 8.39 lakh as compensation to the dependants of welder Saharul Sheikh who was burnt to death on December 26, 2016, at the construction site of the third bridge over River Mandovi.

In a reply to the Goa Human Rights Commission (GHRC), Chief Secretary Dharmendra Sharma said that of Rs 8,39,680 has been paid to the dependants.

He further stated that the management of Larsen & Toubro Limited has been directed to be more vigilant in order to avoid such mishaps at the work site.

A complaint was filed by activist advocate Aires Rodrigues with GHRC expressing apprehension that the authorities would hush up the case.

Rodrigues stated that the authorities need to detail as to what measures they intend to take to avoid such mishaps leading to loss of precious lives in violation of human and fundamental rights.

He said compensation of Rs 8.39 lakh is peanuts as the worker was 29 years old and is survived by two children and an elderly mother. “The next hearing is fixed in the month of April, I will appeal to enhance the compensation figures,” Rodrigues said.
