Lady constable commits suicide

PANJIM: A lady police constable, attached to the office of the North Goa Superintendent of Police, committed suicide by hanging herself at her residence in Porvorim on Wednesday night. Porvorim Police said no foul play is suspected and neither has family made any complaint.

PANJIM: A lady police constable, attached to the office of the North Goa Superintendent of Police, committed suicide by hanging herself at her residence in Porvorim on Wednesday night. Porvorim Police said no foul play is suspected and neither has family made any complaint. 

“Aarti Keluskar (28) was brought dead at Goa Medical College and Hospital last night (Wednesday) around 11.45 pm, we have registered a case of suicide,” Police Inspector Paresh Naik said.

He said that the family members of the deceased told police that she committed suicide by hanging herself. Naik said that an inquiry into her death is on.

In recent year there have been a number of cases of constables committing suicides, including that of Constable Chandru Gawas who was attached to Crime Branch and committed suicide in May 2012. After an inquiry a Police Inspector was suspended by the Department for alleged harassment which was noted in the suicide note of Gawas. 

Other suicides have been of Constable Sudhir Phadte attached with Crime Branch in December 2006, PC Rupesh Volvoikar attached with Pernem Police Station in March 2009, PC Nikhil Arondekar attached to Pernem Police Station in February 2016. 

In October 2015, Police Sub-Inspector Gaurish Malik attempted to commit suicide after firing a bullet from his official gun at his chest. 

In some cases harassment at work place had been alleged.
