Loaded National Permit truck veers off the road at Gulem

CANACONA: A National Permit (NP) truck loaded with goods veered off the road near Bhumipurush temple at Gulem in Canacona. The driver and cleaner, however, reportedly escaped unhurt.

The driver of a NP truck KL-26-F-4599 loaded with transport goods and on its way to Margao was unable to gauge the depth of a turn near Bhumipurush temple at Gulem in Canacona lost control as the vehicle slided and fell on its side due to the absence of crash railing and landed into a drain a few metres below the road.

Most of the NH66 road from Polem till Margao is narrow with blind curves specially on the treacherous Karmalghat and Partagal slope which has witnessed many accidents in the recent past as the unsuspecting motorists mainly those coming from outside Goa find the road too hot to handle resulting in either hitting other vehicles coming in the opposite direction or sliding down the slope due to the absence of crash guards.

Frequent requests by locals to widen the road or erect crash guards has not also yielded any constructive results, say the locals.
