Locally grown rice on sale at Curtorim

MARGAO: The Curtorim Biodiversity Management Committee and farmers of Curtorim have launched a 100% locally grown rice under the name ‘Cuddtari’. The initiative has been supported by the Goa State Biodiversity Board, under UNEP-GEF-MOEFCC-ABS Project. 

The Curtorim BMC has thanked staff, Curtorim Farmers Union, local MLA Aleixo Reginald Lourenco, Pradip Sarmokadam of the Goa State Biodiversity Board and several others for helping them for the same. 

The farmers had sown the Jyoti variety brown rice which is said to be good for diabetics. They got a total of over 16 tonnes of the rice in Curtorim, the granary of Salcete and have after processing the same have opened it for sale at Rs 45 per kg. The sale of this rice is going to give direct benefit to the farmer. 

This rice was mechanically transplanted at Curtorim lakes by Fr Quadros of the Don Bosco Lotoulim. The rice was sent to Kudal for processing and has arrived at Curtorim. 

J Santana Fernandes of Curtorim BMC said that their intention is to protect, conserve and preserve the varieties and biodiversity of Curtorim.
