MARGAO: Margao Municipal Council has cancelled the work order issued to Bapu Environmental Social Service Organisation to collect garbage from the households in the wards of Fatorda constituency and will shortly be issuing tenders for expression of interest for this work.

It may be recalled that MMC had started door-to-door garbage collection in seven wards of Fatorda constituency from November 1, 2017 and had signed an agreement with Bapu Environmental Social Service Organisation to provide 45 labourers who would be paid Rs 500 per day.

However, the agreement was mired in controversy as it was signed without inviting tenders which is the normal procedure for any government contract. Various people including former chairperson of MMC Savio Coutinho had raised this issue.

Besides, the contractor ran into trouble for providing a bill for 45 labourers for the first month even though he had provided only about 30 labourers per day. This issue resulted in the Chief Officer even lodging a complaint with the Fatorda Police Station.

Recently, the Shadow Council of Margao raised the issue again following which the council has now decided to cancel the contract and invite fresh tenders.

“What one must realize is that we do not get labourers to do this work and the council has to rely upon anybody who is willing to provide labourers,” said MMC Chairperson Dr Babita Prabhudessai.
