VASCO: The Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes has activated the dormant child committee and directed its members to keep a tab on child labour.

Some years ago, the MMC had constituted a child committee to deal with child labour; however, it remained non-functional since its constitution.

“As per the directions, all municipal bodies should constitute a child committee. At Vasco, such committee was already there on paper and hence I have activated the committee and have given appointment letters to all committee members. An action plan has already been drawn,” Fernandes said after holding maiden meeting with the members of Child Committee.

“As per the action plan, the committee will look at various aspects with regards to protection of child rights. Similarly, it has been directed that the committee should inspect market areas to check if any child has been employed in shops, restaurants etc and any violation will be booked. Similarly, we want to appeal to the people of the port town to remain vigilant and report child labour (child below age of 14 years found employed) to the child committee or MMC,” he said.
