MARGAO: There is good news for Madgaonkaars, the work order of the multi-storey parking project of Margao will soon be issued. The project, for which foundation stone was laid in 2015, is aimed at accommodating two and four wheelers of Margao easing parking and traffic problems in the town.

Over three decades of planning and promising of a solution to the parking problems of the commercial capital, the multi-storey parking project on the lines of Panjim one is set to come up at the old fish market land in Margao.

Today, thousands of vehicles come to Margao and being parked in no parking areas due to lack of space. The project of parking which was planned from the Golden Jubilee fund never took off. The corner stone for the multi-storey parking project at the old fish market area was laid amidst lot of politics.

Chief Officer Yashwant Tawde informed that the cost of the project is around Rs 4 crore and is planned to accommodate over 200 two wheelers and equal number of four wheelers.

“The tendering has been done and the file has been sent to the Superintending Engineer of PWD for approval,” Tawde said.

“Our consultant has designed the multi-storey parking project for parking of 4 and 2 wheelers. The project is of around Rs 4 crore of which one floor will have 2-wheeler and one will have 4 wheeler parking,” Tawde said.

With several commercial buildings converting their mandatory ground floor parking areas into commercial shops the problem of traffic has been increasing manifold in Margao.

Mahesh Damodar Nayak, a local, said, “The traffic problem of Margao has reached such an extent that a pedestrian reaches his destination earlier then the vehicles. The law enforcement doesn’t have any idea how to handle the traffic in the town and the problem at Market and centre of the city have just begun.”

The quantum of fines and challans issued by the traffic department is a proof that the problem is worsening and this project will relax the problem if completed and commissioned on time.
