VASCO: After the lifting of Lok Sabha elections Code of Conduct for more than three weeks, pre-monsoon works still remain incomplete in Mormugao Municipal Council jurisdiction.

Over the period of one month, pre-monsoon works in municipal area are ongoing but it has not been completed despite mid June with people facing the hardships due to water clogging and overflowing of drains.

Some citizens from Vasco on the condition of anonymity opined that the recent municipal council's political turmoil is one of the major reasons behind the delay in the completion of pre-monsoon work.

Another person named Ashok, a resident of Baina area said that just ahead Ravindra Bhavan road there was water clogging. In low lying areas, there was flooding for some hours when there were heavy rains two days ago.

When contacted Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes informed that the pre-monsoon works was delayed due to Code of Conduct. But the municipality has taken up the works at a faster pace.

“I have also created a WhatsApp group specially dedicated for the citizens of Vasco town so that they can post the areas where water clogging, garbage waste dumping and any other grievances they are coming across. There is also special dedicated flying squad which will act as quick response team to such emergencies," he added.

It may be recalled that since month of May, the no confidence motion episode started, which was dragged almost a month long with involvement of Directorate Of Municipal Administration (DMA), waver off the decision of presiding officer by Urban Development Minister Milind Naik as directed by the Court. Re-staging of no confidence motion and toppling of chairperson and vice chairperson of Mormugao Municipal Council. To elect the new chairperson and vice chairperson further few more days will be taken.

After the passing of no confidence motion, outgoing chairperson Kritesh Gaonkar from the Naik’s panel and his Opposition councillor Dipak Naik who is backed by Vasco MLA Carlos Almeida, both councillors have made counter allegations against each other claiming that their Opposition are creating hindrance in developmental works by bringing internal politics in public work and efforts are being made to change power centres. Sadly, this whole process has led to the delaying of pre-monsoon works and public are at the receiving end, who are now facing the inconvenience.
