MARGAO: Margao Councillor Manoj Masurkar yesterday shifted the garbage transfer station that he had erected at Sirvodem at the junction leading to the sewerage treatment plant and replaced it with a bench for people to sit and some potted plants.

Masurkar said he was forced to shift the transfer station as it was being misused mostly by people travelling by that road. “People would throw all kinds of garbage there while travelling by their vehicles instead of dumping the garbage bags inside the bins in the cage,” he said.

He said the garbage dumped outside was not only looking messy but also posed a hazard for motorists as cattle and stray dogs used to frequent it to eat whatever was available.

Meanwhile, former chairman of Margao Municipal Council Savio Coutinho who had complained about the transfer station being hazardous welcomed its removal from the junction and congratulated Manoj for responding to people’s objections to it.
