MAPUSA: The Mapusa Merchants’ Association has decided to intensify its agitation through a peaceful protest on August 15 to protest the alleged illegalities in the Mapusa Municipal Market.  The Association expects over 100 people to join the protest.

The merchants have decided to protest following a recent commotion in the Mapusa market on the issue of encroachments by non-Goan vendors.

Association president Ashish Shirodkar informed that the members have appealed to the people to gather in large number and support the cause of the merchants keeping aside party politics.

“Wednesday’s protest will be symbolic and there will be a signature campaign.  The protestors will be given placards and the dharna will be carried out without creating a law and order situation. It is high time the authorities wake up to the illegalities prevalent in the Mapusa municipal market,” Shirodkar informed at a city hotel on Monday.

“We are appealing to other associations to join the protest so that equal representation is given to local vendors. There should be no partiality as certain vendors are allowed to sit in a designated area while the others are left out,” Ashish added.
