PANJIM: Urban Development Minister Francis D’Souza on Thursday stated that people dependent on mining took to the streets as they failed to understand that the State government was with them.

“Now it is up to the administration to decide what action is to be taken against them. That day adults, tourists, school children were inconvenienced as all the roads were blocked,” D’Souza said.

He added, “I am concerned about both the people dependent on mining who agitated and also the general public and so is the State government. Government is for them, which the agitators failed to understand.” He further said that blocking of highways should not be allowed.

Speaking about himself, D’Souza said he reached home for lunch, which he usually has at 1.30 pm, around two hours late.

“From Panjim I went to St Cruz then Merces, then after that to Ribandar, later to Divar, crossed the ferry and reached Mayem and from there to Calvim, then Alorna and finally Mapusa at 3:30 pm,” D’Souza said.
