PANJIM: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast the withdrawal of the southwest monsoon over the Goa coast in the next two or three days.

The withdrawal of monsoon has been delayed as the monsoon currents are still active over the Konkan belt. The normal date by which the monsoon withdraws from over Goa is between October 7 and 10, but in 2016 the withdrawal was delayed and occurred on October 16.

IMD-Goa Director ML Sahu said the monsoon currents are still active and that has resulted in the delay in the withdrawal of the monsoon. “The initial delay was due to the existence of cyclonic circulation over north interior Karnataka and south Konkan,” he explained.

He said that considering the prevailing condition, the monsoon withdrawal may take place in the next two-three days.

Post the monsoon season, which ended on September 30, the State recorded over five inches of rainfall till date. The total season rainfall this year was only 100 inches, with a 14 percent deficit.
