CANACONA: An over-speeding Maruti Swift car knocked down a two-wheeler rider on a sharp turn of National highway at Charrasta in Canacona, late on Saturday evening, causing severe injuries to the rider. 

However, the driver of the car who was trying to escape was nabbed by alert locals at Gulem, a little away from the accident spot.

The Swift car was proceeding from Canacona towards Margao, while the two-wheeler was coming from the opposite side, when the driver of the yellow number plate car Abhijit Kumar Rai, a resident of Bihar, dashed against the oncoming two-wheeler, causing injuries to the rider Nandesh Velip of Morpila. The man who lay motionless on the road and was later shifted to Canacona community health centre by an ambulance, which eyewitness claim came after half-an-hour, after being called on their emergency line. 

Meanwhile, locals who had gathered at the accident spot alerted the Canacona police who with the help of locals swiftly intercepted the Swift car and took the car and the driver in their possession about 1 km away from the accident site, as he parked his car by the road side restaurant and sat there after fleeing the scene.
