MARGAO: The by-elections to the Zilla Parishad seats of Nuvem and Curtorim were held on Sunday. The election though got a very less response as just over 50% voters cast their votes in both the constituencies.

The 25 polling booths of Curtorim received a total response of 53.07% of voters on the voting day. There were a total of four candidates in fray in both these constituencies of which only two candidates were fielded by political parties while the rest were Independents.

Curtorim saw 9862 (4351 males and 5511 female) voters come to cast their votes out of a total 18584 registered voters.

In Nuvem, the total voting percentage could only reach to 51.15% till the end of voting. 3172 males and 4344 females and a total of 7516 voters came out to vote out of the 14693 voters in Nuvem ZP jurisdiction.

The Returning Officer Uday Prabhudesai told the media that, “The elections have been peaceful and slow as well; the voting went on at a slow pace since morning and the turnout is low.”

Meanwhile, the people of the constituencies were heard saying that the seriousness of the elections has been reduced due to constant elections and by-elections all over Goa and hence the turnout is just the example of what people feel regarding the elections and re-elections now a days.

Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco has expressed his displeasure over the low turnout at the ZP election and told that people are too tired of elections now. He has expressed confidence of win for Congress in both the Constituencies. He also feels that one major reason for less turn out is the less amount of actual on ground campaign.

The resignations by ZP of Curtorim Clafasio Dias and Nuvem Wilfred D’Sa for contesting Assembly Election have necessitated these bye election and the results will complete the ZP South Goa strength.
