PANJIM: Nilkanth Bhomkar, elected as Sarpanch of Old Goa panchayat on Monday, was voted out by 5 to 4 votes on Saturday. Janita Madkaikar, wife of Power Minister Pandurang Madkaikar, has been elected as the new sarpanch.

A no confidence motion was moved against Bomkar within 24 hours of his election on June 19. Five of the nine panch members voted against Bhomkar on June 24.

On June 19, five members had voted for Bhomkar defeating Janita. However, the minister had protested on the same day against the Returning Officer and alleged that he was hand-in-glove with the Bhomkar group.

Old Goa Panchayat has filed a police complaint against Pandurang Madkaikar for creating a ruckus in the panchayat house. Bhomkar has also alleged he was manhandled and threatened.

This is the first panchayat to have a change in sarpanch so soon after the polls.
