PANJIM: The High Powered Committee on Sonsoddo has decided to call on Hindustan Waste Treatment Plant to reduce the garbage at Sonsoddo.

Fatorda MLA and Minister for Town and Country Planning Vijai Sardesai, emerging from the meeting, said that the earlier tender was not feasible.

“The issue right now before us is to reduce the hill of garbage at Sonsoddo before the monsoon and for that the tender issued earlier is not feasible as MMC is unable to provide an alternative place to dump waste,” Sardesai said.

He stated that the committee has decided to ask Hindustan Waste Treatment Plant Pvt Ltd, which is managing the Saligao plant, to manage garbage at Sonsoddo.

Asked whether this means that a new plant of Rs 149 cr (same as Saligao) would come up at Sonsoddo, he replied, “The plant can be looked after later. We need to clear the garbage first and for now the promoters will only work in this regard on same terms and conditions as Saligao. Our priority is to reduce the waste before the monsoon and not setting up of plant, these are two different issues.”
