MARGAO: The Road Safety and Traffic Management sub-committee at its meeting on Friday decided to get the panchayats through their respective road safety and traffic management committees recommend steps to go back to the basics to improve the public bus transport system in Goa.

“There are around 15 lakh personal vehicles in Goa today which have sprung up because the public transport system has collapsed,” said GOACAN coordinator Roland Martins speaking at the meeting. Acknowledging that earlier people did travel by buses, he said the recent trend is the result of the collapse of the old system.

He pointed out that the State is in the process of constructing two new bus stands at Margao and Mapusa and suggested that people should give their suggestions and recommendation of what they need from these bus stands and added that the panchayat committees could play a stellar role here.

“In our attempt to get the best for Goa, we have the option today of going in for bio-fuel, solar energy or even electric vehicles in the public sector,” he said adding that now was the right time to bring about a change that is sorely required.

He appealed to those present including the Assistant Directors of Transport from Canacona and Mormugao and traffic police to make the last mile connectivity aim of the Central Government’s mobility mission a success in Goa.
