CUNCOLIM: With Congress nominating Zilla Panchayat member Clefacio Dias as its candidate for Cuncolim constituency, those who were aspiring for the ticket have begun leaving the party and vowing to contest against Dias.

Former MLA Joacquim Alemao, who had high hopes of getting the Congress ticket, quit the party with his supporters and is now preparing to contest as an Independent.

Another aspirant Adv John Montero, who was closed to GPCC chief Luizinho Falerio and who was convenor of the minority cell, plans to quit the Congress along with his supporters.

Sources close to Montero say that he and his supporters would resign from Congress and contest the elections from Cuncolim Constituency on Save Goa Party ticket.

However, sources close to Clefacio dismiss the revolts as inconsequential and would not affect his prospects of winning the elections.

Clefacio camp claims that all those who left the Congress were never Congressmen at heart and soul and that they joined the Congress out of selfish motive.

The exit of the rebels, in fact, is an advantage for the Congress, say Clefacio’s supporters.

Political observers opine that division of secular votes will be an added advantage to BJP Candidate Rajan Naik.
