PANJIM: Eight months after starting operations, the Saligao waste treatment plant officials claim they are ready to export electricity to the State Grid.

The plant which was set up and is operated by Hindustan Waste Treatment Private Limited at a cost of Rs 147 cr, is now handling waste from the North Goa coastal belt. The plant has been generating 4000 units of electricity from the waste it has been treating that is collected from the North Goa coastal belt.

“We have the capacity to generate 3000 units more which can be exported to the State electricity grid. We

have put up the proposal before the State government which has been under active consideration,” Ganesh Kandaswamy (General Manager (Design and Engineering), HWTPL said.

He said the plant treated a huge amount of garbage during Christmas and New Year which was collected from different beaches littered by tourists.

“Due to good response by the panchayats located in the coastal belt, the plant now accepts 120-125 MT of garbage daily which is recycled in a scientific manner, one of the products which is generated is electricity,” he said.

Kandaswamy said 4000 units which are generated are used within the plant, while additional power generation capacity can be used to transmit power to the State grid. “The Electricity Department officials have recently inspected the plant. It will take two months for us to export the power to the State grid, once Electricity Department gives the clearance,” he said.
