MARGAO: Former Margao Municipal Council Chairperson Savio Coutinho on Friday alleged that the segregated garbage collection in six wards of Fatorda is a scam that would cause a loss of around Rs 4 lakhs per month to the council.

He said that Bapu Environmental Social Service Organisation was to provide 45 workers to collect the garbage from households with each labourer being paid Rs 500 per day.

However, he said the contractor had provided only around 30 labourers and further alleged that the MMC would pay the contractor the full amount payable for providing 45 labourers, thereby paying extra for 15 labourers who did not work at all.

Besides, he alleged that the contractor is paying the labourers only Rs 9,000 per month, while pocketing the amount paid by the MMC. He said the contractor told the labourers that he can pay only that much as he has to pay the councilors, supervisors and others.

While demanding an enquiry in the matter, Savio also questioned why Goans doing the same work in other wards are paid only Rs 300 per day, while those provided by the contractor in six wards were paid Rs 500 per day. He also demanded that the agreement with Bapu Environmental Social Service Organisation be terminated immediately.
