PANJIM: Congress has demanded 100 percent compensation to Cotigao villagers, whose paddy fields were destroyed due to flooding on Saturday night.

Congress president Shantaram Naik on Monday visited the affected area and demanded that government give 100 percent compensation to the people through the Disaster Management Authority by amalgamating different funds.

He was accompanied by Canacona Congress MLA Isidore Fernandes and other party workers. “State government should also give funds from its own coffers in addition to funds that may be recommended by Disaster Management Authority,” Naik said.

He lamented that the National Institute of Oceanography report, given in connection with the 2009 flood, is lying in cold storage and that the government has failed to act on its recommendation.

Around 60 families had to be shifted after water levels at River Talpona rose unexpectedly due to heavy rains upstream.
