PANJIM: South Goa Collector Swapnil Naik has submitted a report to the Chief Electoral Officer stating that the Army personnel who voted in Navelim on February 4 did so as per the Supreme Court guidelines.

Speaking to Herald, Naik said the Supreme Court in 2014 had said that Army personnel be allowed to vote wherever they were posted on duty. “Accordingly, the process was started in 2015 and around 380 voters were enrolled in the electoral rolls that year,” Naik said.

He added that another 280 were enrolled in 2016 and all these names figured in the supplementary list published in January 2017. “We have conducted an inquiry and submitted the report to the CEO,” he said.

Asked why candidates did not get a chance to campaign in Navelim camp, he said. “It wasn’t just one candidate but all in the fray did not get a chance (to campaign). So there is no chance of advantage to one candidate.”
