MARGAO: Strawberry cultivation is all set to make a comeback in Sanguem taluka and the promoters are expecting a production of 32,000 kilograms bringing in revenue of around Rs 66 lakh.

The strawberry cultivation will commence in October in Salgini and Verlem which have the ideal temperature for this crop as it is quite cool here given the height at which they are situated.

It may be recalled that a few ago years strawberries were cultivated in these places and in fact many people used to visit these areas to see the strawberries. However, for the last two or three years the cultivation had stopped.

This time around the Atal Gram Development Agency has brought in master trainers from Mahableshwar to train the local farmers on various aspects including preparing the land, watering the plantation and even pest management.

“We expect the fruits to be ready for harvest by December and this will continue for at least three months giving at least 32,000 kgs of strawberries in Goa itself,” project director of the Agency Vijai B Saxena said.
