MAPUSA: Students from Mapusa colleges protested against dumping of garbage and urination in the open at the Mapusa bus stand and its surrounding areas.

The Mapusa bus stand area has two sulabh toilets; two more toilets complexes are inside the market and the market yard also has one such facility. Instead of using these toilets, people urinate in the open to avoid paying charges for using these facilities; but in the bargain, the people don’t realise that they are dirtying the area.

During the protest, the students advised the people present at the bus stand not to urinate in the open, but use the toilets.

Few days before the protest, the students reportedly wrote to the Mapusa police requesting their staff to accompany them during their protest and fine those found urinating in the open. But, the cooperation of the police was not forthcoming.

However, the Mapusa Municipal Council sent its workers to assist the students to clean up the area.

Claiming that under the Police Act, police can fine those found urinating in public places, the students have urged the Mapusa police to fine those found doing so.
